I joke though. Just disassembled the block. I bought an entire NA8 engine for 150 clams. The previous owner told me it was making a light rod knock/mechanical noise at light rpm. Looking at the bearings I can believe that. Between the bearing wear, remote oil filter kit, and return line bung in the oil pan drain plug, he definitely had it turbo’d. The bores are in good shape and its all going to a machine shop anyway. I only want it for the oil pan, block, crankshaft, and maybe rods. I may splurge for lighter forged bits. Al so Troegs Perpetual is good, I think its still the #1 IPA in PA.

I picked up a Miata motor for $50, sold the head for forty and the rest is sittin on my garage floor. I took some other stuff off. I may still have the oil pan. How do I go about identifying the block?

There are code stampings on the block that will tell you. I can’t emember what means what but it’s a quick google search. The blocks are the same anyway from 94'-05'.

This is my first engine rebuild. I'd come down to talk shop, drink beer, and help out...but I am definitely no subject matter expert.

What are you using to walk your way through it? I've done suspension work, sway bars and coilovers, but only done the thermostat on the engine. I want to do the timing belt and water pump, but have a feeling I should check compression first, and am worried about where that will lead

You can find the Mazda factory service manuals via pdf with some Google kung fu . Look for Mellens. I’ve got myself a Haynes manual and watch plenty of YouTube videos. FlyinMiata makes some tools that help a lot with replacing everything to do with a timing belt/water pump.
In special regards to the water pump, when you order one it might come with the paper gasket. Mazda also sent it with a metal gasket. Forums will talk about which one to use and if you should use a sealant. I ordered the metal gasket and used sealant and have had no leaks. You DO NOT want to take all that shit back off just for a leaking gasket

This isn’t happening for some time :( Army sending me away for a good while. Car is going to be put in storage mode at my brother’s place in the next couple days. I’ll definitely get ahold of you when the swap happens because I’ll need some assistance
